There’s a probability you spend about $3,500 per year on fuel if you are on the road as much as the average driver. This is a good time to implement some petrol-saving strategies. Double the number of kilometres you get by sticking to these tips.
Drive smoothly
For good fuel efficiency, you must accelerate evenly. You’ll squeeze more fuel into the engine whenever you squeeze the accelerator.
Get up to the speed you want, then try to hold your foot steadily. Driving smoothly with minimal acceleration and braking will save you 20% more on fuel efficiency.
Constant speed
Don’t exceed the limits! The faster you drive, the more fuel you use without realising just how much. Travelling at a more constant speed will make your car perform economically. Consider using cruise control if your car is fitted with it.
To slash 12% to 15% off fuel consumption, ease off the accelerator from 110kmh to 100kmh. Slowing down to 90kmh saves another 10%.
Maintain tyre pressure
Proper tyre pressure equates to good mileage out of your car. So, you better check your tyres once a month.
Tyres should have at least a minimum 1.5 mm tread depth and free of defects. A tyre has at least four wear indicators, which are small triangles pointing to bars moulded within the tread. It’s time to replace the tyres when the tread pattern is level with the wear indicator.
Adjust your use of AC
Air conditioning is another big gas consumer. Leaving the car air conditioner on all the time burns through an extra 8% to 12% of fuel. If you need to cool down, roll the windows down. Roll them up once you are getting above 50kmh to reduce wind drag.
Use a bike or walk to reduce fuel consumption
If your car trips are less than two kilometres long, hopping on your bike or walking can cut 5% to 10% of your trips.
Take care of your car
Some of the best ways to take care of your vehicle is to keep it regularly maintained, well tuned, and using proper petrol in it. Car manufacturers have petrol recommended for a specific vehicle.
If you use regular unleaded in your car when it should be run on premium unleaded, expect somewhat higher consumption and slightly less performance.
